- I only know two forges in our district there is one in the village of Ballinode and it belongs to Mr. Sherry. The other is in Scotstown it belongs to a Mr. Kelly. Forges are situated near a road because it is easy for the people to get at it when they need horses shod or other things done. When they are passing they can leave their things at the forge. Forges are always bear a stream because they need water sometimes to cool the iron. The forge in Ballinode is boarded and felted and then it is tarred. The door on the forge is the same shape as the door on a house only it is made in two halves and it is wider. There is only one fireplace in the forge. The implements that the smith uses is an anvil, sledge, hammers, knife, pincers and many other implements. The smith shoes horses and asses. The(continues on next page)
