- In olden times the dwelling houses were made of clay. They were called, "clay huts" or "mud wall cabins". The had no foundations and wer usually built near banks. There were no windows in the cabins but small holes The roof of the cabins were thatched. The fire was at the gable-end and there were no chimneys but a hole near the thatch. In this district the fuel they burned was sticks. The was but one room in each cabin. In some houses they had a settle bed and they had it in a corner at the far side of the fire for a bed. The poor people had bags of straw on the floor to lie upon.
