- Many farmers have special plots for growing sally rods for "skollops". The "skollops" are made by painting at each end a rod about four feet long. These are tied in small bundles and laid aside to season for thatching.
Threshing corn must be done with a flail when required for thatch. While the actual threshing is in progress, another man draws the straw and ties it up in small bunches called "bobbins", suitable for the handy thatcher.
Thatching requires skill as it must carry the rain off the house. The whole roof which needs thatch is cleaned of old "skollops" growths of any kind or decayed thatch. It is sometimes patched with new bobblins held by skollops to level off the roof for the whole coat of new thatch.
