  1. Ardnaree Abbey.
    Donnell O'Dowd built the abbey of Ardnaree but it was taken by the Burkes. The O'Dowds failed to get it back but this was hopeless hence the proverb "He'll get it when the O'Dowds get Ardnaree." In 1603, Donagh Mc. Brian O'Dowd living in "Eskerowen" castle received pardon from James I. In 1641 this fine family was driven from their land and Cromwell's soldiers planted in.
