  1. There was a churn at my home in former times. It was about three feet high. It was about a foot wide at the bottom and it was about half a foot at the top. It was about thirty years old. The lid and the churn-staff are the different parts. There was no mark at the side or bottom of the churn. They used to make butter once a week in the Winter and twice a week in Summer. My Grandmother used to do the churning. Strangers who came in helped at the work for fear they would take the butter. Sometimes it took a half an hour to make the butter and sometimes it took an hour to make it. The churning was done by hand. The churn dash was always moved upwards and downwards. There is a story told about the butter.

    A farmer's wife was making butter one morning. She was churning for about three hours and she couldn't make the butter. A travelling woman went into the house and asked her why she
