  1. The best known member of this family is the house sparrow or the cheeky sparrow, who comes to feed along with the hens. Although they feed on insects too, they do an enormous amount of damage to standing crops of grain and vegetables, and delight in pecking up newly sown seed. The hedge sparrow chiefly builds on banks sheltered by hedges or under hawthorn bushes. The cockoo often usurps the hedge sparrow's nest. The house sparrow feeds on grain during the late Summer and Autumn, and is a great robber of stack yards in the Winter.
