- In Shrove time people marry in this district, and in the months of June, July, November, December. Immediately Shrove comes in, old people meet to make matches for their sons and daughters, and according to the size of the farm, the girl or boy is marrying into, the dowry is paid in accordance. In some cases, stock or land is given instead of money. Long ago a boy would look out for a girl, with a large number of relatives. This was the time of the land troubles, and faction fighting.
One the wedding day a wedding feast is held. Straw boys visit the house. They have straw wound round their bodies and legs, and masks on their faces. Each straw-boy takes the bride in turn to dance. They receive refreshments.
At the race home from the Church, the men usually took out their best horse, and whoever would reach the bride's house, would be treated the best at the breakfast. They also dipped old clothes in oil and had set them alight. These were put on the prongs of forks, and held aloft in(continues on next page)- Collector
