  2. In olden times, the people generally ate wheaten and oaten bread, which was made from wheat and oats, which they grew themselves. The flour was made locally. When the wheat was threshed or scutched, (which was generally the old custom) the people left a bag of wheat by the fire for about a week, until it was thoroughly dry and hard. Then they took it to the local mill, and got it ground.
