  1. 1 Nobody would give out any money on New Year's Day, nor throw out ant dust or ashes.
    2. On Twelfth Night, 12 rushes were lighted and named for the members of the family. The possessor of the candle which quenched first would be the first to die.
    3. On St. Bridget's Night crosses were made of timber and straw and put up on the roof inside.
    4. On Shrove Tuesday Eve all would eat meat and fast from that on during Lent.
    5. On St. Patrick's Day they used to "drown" the shamrock.
