   Hedge- School During the fourteenth and fifteenth and the early part of the nineteenth centuries there was no school building but a certain learned man was selected by the parishioners to teach their children. This teaching was generally carried on secretly in the open air or sometimes in farmers' houses. In those days teachers were not paid by the government but were obliged to live on the subscription given to him by the parishioners. Irish was spoken in the hedge schools. Writing was then done with chalk and slate. The children were not seated in desks but
