- The meal for the oaten bread was ground in the mill. There was a mill at Tullyrapp, and it was owned by a man named Finlay. The farmer sent five or six bags of corn at a time to be ground and the meal was called a melder of meal. The owner of the mill got a 'mooter' out of every melder, that was about five or six pounds of meal, and the miller also usually got about a dishful of meal out of a melder.
The new oatmeal was taken home and put into a big bin, and one or two of the people of the home got into the bin and tramped it tight, with their feet.
