- Long ago when the people had no lamps they made candles of rushes. They got a rush and if possible a thick one. They peeled this rush leaving the white inside and one stripe of the green bark. Then this part is steeped in oil or lard which was taken from pigs when killed. It is then melted in a metal container. It is then steeped for a considerable time. Then it is taken out and left to dry and put in a pile near the fire-place. When a light was required one rushlight was always used. Pigs were generally kept in those days for this purpose.
