In those days motorcars were not as plentiful as they are at present, and a person going on a journey had to walk or go on horseback. On one occasion this doctor had to visit a patient in Ballymote in the County Sligo.
When on his way, there came a snow shower and he took shelter in a house by the roadside.The inmates of the house told him to take his horse into the kitchen. In a bed in the corner lay a young man whose end seemed to be very near. The doctor inquired into the circumstances of his disease. He told the doctor he had been visited by many doctors but none of them would give him any relief, and he had often a mind to get Doctor Shiels only he always heard that neither God nor man could pay him(continues on next page)
