- The island of Inis-Saimer situated at the mouth of the river Erne at Ballyshannon, derives its name from the Irish word “Inis” which means an island and the word “Saimer” which was the name given to a dog.
This island was first inhabited by Partholan and his wife. The dog belonged to Partholan’s wife. In a fit of passion, Partholan killed the dog. Afterwards he relented and to perpetuate its name called the island Inis-Saimer.
There is a field at Laputa near the residence of Captain Ramage in which field stands a tree called “McGovern’s tree” where a British officer named Mc Govern was killed in a duel with a brother-officer. It appears that both of them were in love with(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
