Many stories have been about the late headmaster Mr. P.A. O'Beirne of Glasthule. He would pretend to sleep and the boys thinking he was asleep, would go up to the fire and throw gun-caps into it. They then scurried to their places. The caps would go off with a bang and Mr. O'Beirne would jump up with feigned fright. After a minute or so, he would call up the culprits and give them the cane.
