  1. There was a hedge-school in the district of Ballinlobaun , Crossmolina , County Mayo in the year eighteen hundred and fifty .There was no particular place for the school as it used to be held in the houses of the istrict on turns and the school was known as the district hedge school of Ballinlobaun .
    The name of the schoolmaster was John Loftus . He was a fairly good scholar and his mother was a rag woman .He stayed at his own house .It was just at the gable of where James Munnelly's house is at present in Ballinlobaun , Crossmolina, Co.Mayo .
    The school was carried on in the farmers' houses and in the old stables and barns.Each pupil used to pay one penny and two pence and three pence per week to the teacher according to his or her class and means.
