  1. Long ago there lived a poor widow in County Clare who had seven children the eldest was ten years old. It was Christmas night and they had nothing to eat so the widow prayed to god to take the children to himself. It was not long after her prayer untill the door opened and in walked Granie O with two young women carrying big dishes filled with fine food. The widow and her family welcomed and said "Perhaps ye would give some to a poor family who have been fasting all night."
    "God has sent us to you with the answer of your prayer and to give you this food and to ask you if you are ready to part with your family?" said Granie O.
    "I am not" said the widow.
    "A short while ago did you not pray to god to take them to Himself? asked Granie O.
    "I don't know" answered the woman. "I was
