At that time the table was left in the middle of the floor in most of the houses. Our ancestors always had hard oaten cakes and sometimes they had cakes made with oatmeal entirely and wet with hot water. This was baked beside the fire on a stone griddle and it was called "Tom Steel." They had another cake made with potatoes and mixed with flour which was called boxty. The only meat they ate was American bacon which was very fat and was also cheap.
The people had plenty of fish, as the salmon,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
