    to lay. These were made of straw plaited together. They were wide at the bottom and gradually getting narrow up to the top. There was a square hole in the side for the hen to go in and out. They were hung up on the kitchen wall by means of a straw rope.
    Then they had fire-side stools made in the same way as the hen's nest and were filled with straw to keep them firm.
