    Pheasants, hares and rabbits abounded in the demesne and surrounding lands. People remember seeing hares running up and down through the street of Balla. Terms of imprisonment were given to anyone who dared to take a pheasant or a hare.
    Until the Land Commission bought the place the landlord took an interest in the school. He gave presents to the children each year. He also kept the place in repair.
    Lord Kilmaine. Part of the outlying district belonged to this family. No evictions were carried out in his area.
