    The place was then owned by Andrew Stackpool, a catholic. The authorities heard that he used to shealter priests and his land was going to be confiscated unless he became a protestant. He was old then and decided to give up his religion, and he was leaving the place by night by carriage and pair but at a certain part of the road the horses shied and no amount of beating or coaxing would prevail on them to go further. So he returned to the house and a short time later died a catholic.
    There was a drawbridge here which was lowered day and taken up by night as protection.
