    the kitchen.They were down near the fire.One kind of bed was called a settle-bed.The people slept in the beds.The hearth was against the gable -end .There was no chimney in the houses of long ago.Later on the chimneys were made of timber.I do not know whether the old people remember a fire in the middle of the floor or not.there was only one door in the houses long ago.The doors were fastened with a latch.I do not know how many windows were in the houses long ago.The floor was made of mortar.There were half -doors in every house.They used timber as fuel.Candles were not made in the district.i do not know of any other
