- We have a churn at home it is about 3 and a half ft tall, it is 4 ft in width at the top, and 4 ft at bottom. It is about 3 ft round in the middle. It is about forty years old.
When churning we use a churn dash and a capp which goes down the length of the lid. There is a hole in the lid. The capp is used for keeping the buttersmith from japping.
There are seven Iron hoops round the outside of it. The old people used a round stick to rock it to gather the butter.
Most people put a pinch of salt in the milk before they start to churn.
There is a proverb which says
"long churning makes good butter" and another which says "The more water the less butter.
