  1. Long ago before tea was introduced potatoes and milk were eaten in large quantities. In the spring time when milk was scarce the people made "Sowins" and drank them.
They made them of oaten meal and water. They would steep it for a day or so. It is said that when people were drinking "Sowins" they were far stronger and healteir.
The food at present is quite different to olden times. Oaten meal bread was the only bread in olden times. "Potato bread" and "boxty" was also eaten in olden times. The "oaten bread" was baked on a griddle at the side of the fire. The way "boxty" was made was with raw potatoes.
