- In the days of Lady Lisgar who resided in the castle, now in ruins, at Bailieboro, a most cruel deed was committed by her orders. A young Catholic boy 14 years old, was walking around the demesne one day. He casually and unthinkingly pulled a branch off of a tree there. Lady Lisgar caught him doing so, and ordered him to be hanged, there and then on the tree. Her orders were obeyed immediately. This is a true tale. The tree can still be seen and it is the same at all seasons. It never bore a leaf since that occurrence and is quite black and sapless. It is also true that a lark never sang over the place since. This boy was the only son of a widow woman. In the adjoining parish of Killinkere, not far from Grousehall old barrack, Mass was celebrated in the olden times in the Cornamadda Rocks.
