- In the townland of Muff, parish of Kingscourt, Co. of Cavan There was a fine old castle erected by the O'Reillys, of Breffnie, about the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Large numbers of servants were employed by the O'Reilly's. One day word was conveyed to the O Reilly's that the castle was to be attacked by the Cromwellian soldiers. They were well equipped with heavy cannon and for several days they battered the walls of the castle with cannon ball. But the bombardment seemed to have no effect. The English were about to withdraw, when a traitor from the ranks of the defenders arrived in their camp. This traitor told the English commander that if they could hit a certain portion of the castle they would make a huge breach, and the remainder of the building would soon collapse. He arranged to return to the castle, and place a white cloth on the weak part of the building.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
