The people had to live on stirabout or porridge made from Indian meal and do a hard day's work, as well. The people to go to break stones on the road to earn the yellow meal. Some of the people had to leave their homes and go to look for work in other countries. But there came relief to the poor people and it was called "Goverement Relief Bill."
The poor people got a half-crown a week. The times got better in '49 they got tea at Christmas and Easter and the labouring men were paid six pence a day and had to live on it and rear a wife and family.
