    The principal Hotel and about ten of the largest and best shops were set ablaze and levelled to the ground.
    The people of the town had fled some days before so that no one could be found to assist in saving property. Had they been there they would have to remain in hiding, as the soldiers were shooting, and bullets whizzing in all directions.
    At daybreak the town was a mess of ruins, and deserted completely, and the inhabitants did not return for some days, but remained in country houses for safety. The Burning of Granard was done as reprisal for the
