- The houses long ago were mostly built of blue clay and on this account they were called mudwall houses. A great number of them are in existence yet.
The old people had a great fear of wind storms and when they started to build a house they always selected a hallow; if possible, in order to have land shelter.
The clay for building the walls was raised during the Winter months and was allowed to remain in a large heap until the Summer. Then it was spread out to a depth of about a foot, water was poured over it and it was thoroughly mixed. Rushes were sometimes mixed with clay to make it tough.
The walls of the houses were often made three feet in width and there were no frames used in their erection. The doors were narrow and low and the windows were only about one foot square. The roofs were bog oak covered with straw, rushes or reeds for thatch, and the floors were made of earth.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
