- Churns were made in olden times by a man called a cooper. This industry is now discontinued.
The cooper shaped the staves which were made of oak as no other kind of timber would do. Each stave was four or five inches wide. The staves were hammered together tightly. When all the staves were placed properly in place iron bands were put around them so as to fasten them securely.
There were little holes made in the stave in the bottom and a bigger piece of oak was hammered into the holes so as to keep the churn up off the ground.
