    and goes alone to an old lime kiln or sand pit. She drops the ball into the pit holding the end in her hand. She then rewinds the ball until it gets caught in something below when she calls out, "Who holds my ball of yarn?" Her future partner for life is expected to give his name. But it often happened that her secret is discovered and someone waits in the pit and gives an unwelcome reply to her bitter disappointment.
