    Hawes looking for employment.
"I thought when you left me last year you said you never wanted to see me again," said Hawes.
"Well, you know," replied the other, "When all fruit fails, welcome Hawes!"

  2. Thomas ("Tavish") Mullen, Knocklore, was a "character." He died about four years ago.
One market day he was in Ardee with a load of turnips to sell. Turnips were a dung in the market at the time. But cheap as they were, some of the "boys", in the guise of buyers, went to Tavish and offered him quite ridiculous prices (3/-, 2/6, 2/-, for about 15 cwt of turnips), just to annoy him or, perhaps, to hear the responses.
In the evening a friend came over to him and, knowing nothing of the trying day Tavish had, asked,
    "You didn't sell, Tavish?"
"No; I didn't," replied Tavish, shortly.
"And what were you getting for them?" queried the friend, innocently.
    "Impudence!" Tavish told him.
