1:11:37Most of the local weather lore is embodied in the old rhyme beginning,
"The hollow winds begin to blow;
The clouds look black; the glass is low;"
and ending,"'Twill surely rain - I see with sorrow - our jaunt must be put off to-morrow".
The older people frequently quote from this, their standard text on the subject. These are additional poems:
"Fine Gor (Fionna Tabar) - or, as it is now generally translated, "Goats' Hair" - is a sign of rain. Fionna Tobar are hair-like wisps of cloud.
"Blacks (beetles) coming into houses and creeping about floors indicate rain.
When the willie wagtail is seen on the "street" (in front of the door) rain is approaching.
When the chimney does not draw well, when the crook gets damp and soot from it dirties ones hands; or when the smoke, when it gets outside, is blown towards the ground, rain may be expected.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
