  1. Clare is very rich in ruins of Abbeys which are chiefly around Ennis.
    There are three around Ennis which are; blare Abbey, Ennis Abbey, and New Hall.
    Ennis Abbey; It was founded in the 13th century and was owned by the Franciscans. It was built by Donncadha O'Brien, King of Thomond, in the year 1140. Many great Lords are buried there. It was enlarged by the McNamaras at various times. On the left, facing the altar, is the royal tomb of the breaghs carvings of the Passion are on it and the soldiers are dressed as Irish Gallowglasses. The friars lived peacefully in Ennis Abbey until the time of Queen Elizabeth. During her reign they to leave it, and it was used as a lowit-house until the beginning o the seventeenth century.
