They kept the fireplace in the corner of the house and the floors were made of mud also. At that time the half-doors were to be seen in small country houses and they are still to be seen. The only light they had was rushes dipped in tallow which was kept in a crock in an old fashioned candle-stick which is still there.   2. The kind of houses that were there in former times, the roofs of them were thatched and the walls were made of mud. They were thatched with reed, straw and rushes. The reed and the straw grew in the gardens and the rushes grew in the bogs and fields. There used to be a very big settlebed in every kitchen and six or seven people would sleep in them. There was an old man in Puckaun and he had a very big bed in his kitchen and all the newly married couples around the district used to sleep in it.
