   In olden times the houses were built with mud, and the roofs were thatched made of sally rods, and the reeds which grew by the Shannon side. In the old houses the people kept their beds in the kitchen called settle-beds. In some kitchens, they kept the fowl up in the roosts, and they also kept young calves and sows with their brood. They kept the fireplace in the corner of the house and the floors were made of mud also. At that time the half-doors were to be seen in small country houses and they are still to be seen. The only light they had was rushes dipped in tallow which was kept in a crock in an old fashioned candle-stick which is still there.
