    Trades such as thatching, basket-making, the making of tubs and barrels and tailoring were and are carried on in this district.
    Mr Jack Flynn of Kilscanlon was one of the best thatchers that ever thatched a house from the day he first thatched a house till the day of his death about twenty five years ago. Tom Corbett is about the best thatcher in the district nowadays. He is also a good story-teller. He calls the sticks he thatches with "scollogs".
    Mr Mick Creed was one of the best men to make baskets in the past. He used to make baskets for washing potatoes, calf baskets (muzzles) and baskets for doing messages. He lived in Garryofillane up to about twenty years ago.
