   Several attempts have been made to dig Gubbin's Moat for a crock of gold that all the old people believe to be buried there. Robert Walsh (The Dandy) Knocklong organised a company to find the treasure. After refreshments at Hurley's public house they started at nightfall with spades, picks and a jar of whiskey. A golden coloured cat leaped suddenly out of the side of the moat gave three unearthly caterwails and disappeared in a ball of fire back again to the earth. As the holy water bottle could not be found the organiser took to his heels, and the entire band were quickly back in Glenbrohane. A venturesome young man found the whiskey jar the following morning tightly corked and full of whiskey even tho the diggers had been drinking out of it for four hours. On his way home down the Port road the sidecar wheel broke, and the horse was found dead in his stable three miles away when his owners returned. He took fright when the wheel broke and tore loose from the cart and was not overtaken till he was found dead in his stable with door shut even tho a five feet iron gate from the road to the house was found securely closed.
