- Stocks of goods in the shops a hundred years ago were very meagre. The production of the majority of the necessaries of life at home left very little to be purchased. Very little if any of the two great requirements - feed and clothes were purchased. The food consisted chiefly of potatoes and oatmeal and milk. These were produced by the consumer. The clothes were either frieze, flannel or linen and these were partially or wholly produced in the homes. Very little, if any, of the money received for cattle or dairy produce was spent. The landlords "two pounds and some" had to be ready every gale day. The remainder if any was zealously guarded as fortunes for the daughters of the family.
Despite the small amount required to be bought, every country place had its shops. Each shop stocked a various assortment. Salt, snuff, tobacco, soap, matches, clay pipes were side by side with bales of cloths for the Sunday suits for the well-to-do, clocks, shovels, scythes, with the whiskey barrel in the corner, and the porter barrel under the counter.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
