- As there are no farm animals worth writing about at our house I will describe the animals of the neighbouring farmers. The most plentiful animals are cows, pigs, horses and sometimes sheep and goats, and dogs to turn them in. The fowl on the farm are hens, chickens turkeys, geese and ducks.
It is a common thing in my district to have names on the farm animals to distinguish them from each other. Some of these names ar; Red Heifer, Big Barry, Doctor Ryan, Saucy Jane, Magpie, Grey Pinder and many others too numerous to mention.
When the cows are being driven to and fro from the pastures they are urged on by words like "how how" or "go on there."
The cow-houses are of different make, some with eloping roofs and others with square sides and flat roofs. Inside the cow-house are bails which are placed over the heads of the cows while they are being milked or sometimes they are tied to the wall with fetters or spansels. In some places a horse shoe is hung inside the door to bring luck.
