    In the famine times the people were very poor The food which they depended mostly on before the famine was the potatoe. When the blight came the potatoes failed.
    The people of Ballingarry were very hard struck by the famine because they were largely tradesman and when the famine came they had no food to fall back upon. There was a man found dead where the Convent gate of Ballingarry is now with nettles in his mouth There was another man named Hartnett found dead on the road from Ballingarry
