    The Leipreacan or Mermaid.
    The local spirit we hear of, is
    spriad na Barnagh. It is said that she travelled several miles in the form of fire. She killed her husband, and unbaptised child. It was not long after-wards when she died, and so great were her sins that she would not be allowed into heaven nor hell. She then appeared in a spirit. At night fall she appeared at the cross of Barnagh, and remained there until the cocks crew in the morning.
    On one occasion she was met by a man, who was on his way for the priest for his wife. She stopped him and wanted to kill him, but he asked her to spare him for the sake of his wife. She said she would if he promised her to come again on the following night, at the same hour, and he promised to do so. The man went on to the priest's house, and the priest went with him to the sick woman. After the
