- Travelling people still call to the homes in this district. The same people have been doing so for many years. Some but not all of them are very poor.
Many of them sell small articles e.g pins, hairpins, artificial flowers, lace, tiepins, studs, camphor, pictures, ornaments, statues.
People buy from them. The sellers obtain their supplies in the shops in the towns and city.
These travellers are generally welcome Some of them remain for longer than a night at a time. They usually sleep in barns lofts or coach houses. They rarely have food with them. They accept food, clothing and money - usually a few pence.
They travel on foot as a rule, and singly. Travelling jewmen and black men of the present day do not ask for alms or shelter, all they ask is custom. These are known as "Tallymen". They travel on foot, by bike and by motor.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
