- Houses were built of stone, or mud and were thatched. Thatch was of reed when householder could afford to purchase it near Tallow, Co Waterford. otherwise of wheaten straw, corn straw or in the case of many poor people "sods".
Many old houses had a settle bed in the kitchen. Position was different in different houses, but seems to have been always at right angles to the fire which was in the gable wall.
Half-doors are less common than they were formerly.
Wood and coal were used for the fire. Turf cut from the "mountain" was used to the south of the parish.
Candles were made locally. Rushlights were used.
