- The farming community select the period of the year between Advent and Lent which is known as Shrove for their local marriages. The days appointed in this part of the County Cork are Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and also Sunday. It is customary for the people of this district to assemble at some neighbouring public house and commence what is known as 'matchmaking' for the boy or girl who is to get the property. Needless to say a fortune is required. The inhabitants of this locality generally pay their fortune with money. About a half a century ago it was a very popular custom for a lot of saddled horses to accompany the wedding as far as the church and when the ceremony was performed the married pair rode on one saddled horse to their home.
