  1. The candles in this district were all made at home forty years ago. They were made from tallow of a cow. The tallow was melted in a pot over the fire.
Every family had at least one mould. It was made of tin by a tin's-man and just the size of a candle. The mould was open at one end and brought to a point at the other. There was a small hole at the pointed end, where the wick would be drawn out.
They made the wick of three pieces of cotton and tied to a piece of a twig or nail at one end. The nail or twig was rested across the open end of the mould and the wick taken down through the hole at the other end. The pointed end of the mould was stuck in a sod of turf.
The tallow was taken out of the pot in a tin vessel with a spout to it and put into the mould until it was full. It was left in the mould until the candle was hard, then, the mould was dipped into hot water
