prayer book, needles, bootlaces and pins. The pedlars did not as a rule accept alms and were normally well dressed. In recent years few of those travellers are 'on the road'. Nowadays they travel in families, seek alms in houses along the way and sometimes sell small articles e.g. camphor, matches, laces. They have horse drawn caravans in which they cook and sleep. Sometimes they carry along with them a goat or two. These goats are so well trained that they follow behind the caravan and rarely stray away from their owners. In spite of the fact that they do not engage in making saucepans or buckets they are referred to as tinkers and are not regarded as objects of charity.
