There is still one country shopkeeper doing business like this, in a neighbouring district about three or four miles from here. Local farmers used always take their farm produce - especially butter - to Cork. That was before the railway line from Cork to Bantry was built, or, before the year 1880. Two, or, sometimes three, farmers used join together in filling firkins of butter, and, in this way, they used have a load ready quicker than if each kept his butter to make up a load.
They used take their horses and cars then to Cork alternately, and bring goods there on the return journey. There is one man - about 65 years of age - who calls here from time to time buying fowl. He has a small horse and car, has only one hand, and is known locally as "Jerh Pad Thaighg".- Bailitheoir
