- There are a lot of potatoes grown locally. There are about two or three acres set under the potatoes each year. The farmer starts preparing the ground in the month of February. He ploughs and harrows the ground. When he had that done he opens the drills with a two- board plough. Then he puts out manure in between the drills.
A few days before the potatoes are set they are cut into small pieces called sgiollains. Then the potatoes are set. They are put down on the manure and are set leaving about a foot between them. The potatoes are mostly set in drills locally. in olden times wooden ploughs were used.
Some of the people locally help each other in the setting of the potatoes. During the Summer months the potatoes are earthed. Then when the stalks are good and high they are sprayed with a mixture of blue stone and soda and a quantity of water. When the Autumn comes and(continues on next page)
