- Old Customs about home butter making.
Every body who comes to the house while the butter was making was expected to help to turn the barrel or at least put his or her hand on the barrel with the person making the barrel, for luck. When doing so they should say "God bless us".
Any person who came to the house for a message should wait until the butter was made for fear of carrying away the luck or the butter.
A piece of butter made a week before was sometimes thrown into the barrel. Also money would some times be thrown in for luck.
In them times matches were scarce and a man would sometimes go to a neighbour's house to light his pipe. In some houses if the butter was making he should stay and turn the barrel before being allowed to light his pipe, and then after he was not allowed to go away while smoking(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
